The Honourable Tan Sri Dato' Sri Azam bin Baki has been with MACC [formerly known as the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA)] since 1984. He was born on 12 May 1963. He holds a Diploma in Electrical Engineering (Power) from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, a Bachelor of Jurisprudence from Universiti Malaya and a Master's Degree from Asia E-University.

 

His professional qualifications extend to memberships with the Association of the Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (ACAMS) and the Association of Certified Fraud Examines (ACFE). His credibility is also recognized through the appointment as an Ethic Committee Chairman in Malaysian Hockey Confederation since 2015 and in the Integrity Committee of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) since 2012.

 

During his service in MACC, he has performed a wide range of specialised functions i.e. investigation, intelligence, prosecution and community education. He was also entrusted to lead key positions such as Director of the Intelligence Division, Director of the Investigation Division and the Deputy Chief Commissioner (Operations) which provide him the extensive experience particularly in the investigation into high profile corruption and money laundering cases, forfeiture of criminal assets/ proceeds, as well as applying intelligence-based investigation method.

 

At regional/ international levels, he directs presence and active participation of MACC especially in promoting good practices in corruption prevention, sharing of success stories in high profile/ public interest corruption cases and rendering of operational supports to cross border corruption investigation including related asset recovery. He is active in a number of platforms such as the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC), Economic Crime Agencies Network (ECAN), United Nations Office on Drug and Crime (UNODC), ASEAN Parties Against Corruption and others, such as:

  • 2018 Heading MACC in the International Task Force on 1MDB Multi-Jurisdictional Asset Recovery

  • 2020 Chairman of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation’s (APEC) Anti-Corruption and Transparency Working Group (ACTWG), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

  • 2021 Board of Governors of the International Anti-corruption Academy (IACA), Laxenburg, Austria

 

He was appointed as the Chief Commissioner of the MACC on 9 March 2020 by His Majesty Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, in accordance with Section 5 (1) Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act (MACC) 2009. In November 2021, he was bestowed the Grand Commander of the Order of Loyalty to the Crown of Malaysia by His Majesty which carries the title ‘Tan Sri’.
